Armin Van Buuren

Armin van Buuren

Armin van Buuren is once more lord of the Trance and the king of the dance floor, taking the No. 1 spot in the DJ Mag Top 100 for the third year running. Being the official World's Most Popular DJ is just one of his many achievements, but the driving force behind his success is an overriding passion for dance music. Armin van Buuren was born in Leiden, the Netherlands on December 25, 1976. He finished high school in 1995, and left for college to study law. While studying law, his interest for making music blossomed, and he began working as a DJ in a local club called Nexus. As his musical career began to take off, he temporarily put his law degree on hold, however, he did complete his law degree in 2004 via Oxford University. The final year of his course was inevitably stretched as he juggled his studies with his increasingly hectic schedule; his rise to fame included lots of productions and remixes, as well as playing out to packed clubs every weekend. It took him three years to graduate, but his determination made him succeed. Armin indulged his passion for music from a young age. He spent all the money he earned on records. When he was 10, his mother won a computer, gaining Armin's interest. "So as a little nerdy kid I was writing my own basic programs, and learnt about the technology from there." He progressed from making low profile mix tapes for friends to higher profile mixes when he discovered experimenting with different sequences on his computer through his uncle. "I was so stunned by what I saw him doing on the computer, that I got addicted to creating music right there and then! "I loved Dance music immediately – this great rebellious sound that was so different". Armin cites electronic pioneer Jean Michel Jarre as a major influence, as well as Dutch producer Ben Liebrand, who later mentored him in his mixing and producing. His "Universal Religion" series has been going strong ever since the first edition in 2004. Every edition is a live recording, straight from the epicenter of Dance in summer: Club Amnesia in Ibiza. Every summer, Armin holds residency in this renowned club on the party isle. As the club fills with Dance lovers from all over the world, a special, atmosphere takes over, these special moments of pure Trance bliss, Armin captures onto his "Universal Religion" albums. Latest "Universal Religion 4" is filled with exclusive tracks and remixes, in a tight mix, live recorded at the sacred club. Armin has always had his own studio and worked alone in the beginning of his career. Since the release of his third studio album "Imagine" in 2008 he has been working with Benno de Goeij of Rank1 on all his productions and remixes. Since 1995, he has released many tracks on different labels with increasing success. His first big success was "Blue Fear" at the age of 19. This 'Euro Trance blueprint' made it into the UK Chart. "Communication" was released on the same label, and had a huge impact on Ibiza in the summer of 1999. After being signed to AM PM Records, it busted into the UK Singles Chart at #18 in 2000. Early 1999 Armin started the Armind label together with United Recordings. First release, "Gig One" was well received. Follow up "Touch Me", under the alias Rising Star, was signed to Ministry of Sound UK, while "Free" was signed to R&S Records. Under the Gaia monniker he released "4 Elements" on Captivating Sounds, a sub-label of Warner Brothers. Teaming up with Tiësto, two new projects saw life; under the guise Major League "Wonder Where You Are?" was released on Black Hole Recordings while "Eternity" was released via Armind under the alias Alibi. "Eternity" gained worldwide club and chart success and was signed to Paul van Dyk's Vandit Records. Another major collaboration, this time with Ferry Corsten, resulted in the classic and very successful Trancer "Exhale". In 2000, Armin started his own Armin van Buuren compilation series. He managed to find a balance between Progressive, Techno and Trance. First "A State of Trance" compilation, released in 2000, it sold more than 10,000 copies and contains his infamous remix of Moogwai's, "Viola". The "A State Of Trance" compilations have won many awards and continue to lead the Trance fans in the right direction with a fresh and exclusive selection of the hottest tracks. Second compilation "Basic Instinct" saw its release early 2001. Third compilation "In Motion" was released August 2001 with 4th comp "Transparence", hitting the streets in 2002. In 2003 the "76" compilation saw light with Ultra Records releasing in USA and Canada. 1 BIOGRAPHY (continued) In 2008 his artist album titled 'Imagine' entered the Dutch Album Top 100 Chart at no. 1; the first time a Dance producer accomplished such a feat in the history of Dutch music. The first single taken from the album, "Going Wrong", debuted on his A State Of Trance radio show. The single sees the collaboration of Armin van Buuren with hot German producer Shah and singer Chris Jones. 'Imagine' debuted at #4 on the US Billboard's Top Electronic Albums Chart. Video of second single "In and Out of Love", featuring Sharon den Adel from world renowned Goth rockers Within Temptation, achieved more than 35 million views on YouTube. The album also spawned two more singles, "Unforgivable" featuring Jaren, and "Fine Without You", a collaboration with Jennifer Rene. On the remix front While the remix offers flood in, Armin only takes on tracks that he really loves. He has remixed the theme for the cult TV series 24 as well as tracks for the likes of Motorcycle, The Killers, BT and Moogwai, amongst others. He uses exactly the same criteria for his compilations, meaning that every release from Armin on his long-running Armind label is a bona fide stormer. Armin Only An all-night dance event featuring a nine hour set by the man himself . The event consists of various genres of Dance music (but most predominantly Trance), light, laser and firework shows and supporting acts of singers/vocalists. Sold-out Armin Only shows in 2005 and 2006 created eager anticipation of the third edition, which kicked off in Utrecht The Netherlands in 2008; over 16,000 fans attended and were enthralled by Armin's set. The theme of the night was 'Imagine', described by Armin as "the celebration of our sensations both in life and in club land." Fans all around the world needed not to despair as Armin took the event to Romania, Poland, Belgium, Australia and USA. On New Year's Eve 2008 Armin managed to draw 45,000 fans to the event at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. Promotion of his album "Imagine" has been a prominent concept with the 2008 Armin Only Tour and as such applying the 5 concepts of Imagination (Vision, Scent, Touch, Sound, Emotion) to his sets. The next Armin Only events are in the works for 2010 and 2011. A State Of Trance radio show In March 2001, he started his own radio show on ID&T Radio. In this weekly two-hour show, entitled 'A State of Trance', he plays the latest popular Trance tracks. His show and the artists he features are popularized by publishing the artists and track titles on his website. This radio-show/website combination has proven popular internationally. When ID&T Radio changed genres in 2004, van Buuren left and took A State of Trance with him. It is now a weekly feature on appr. 40 worldwide FM radio stations. A complete list of stations that broadcast A State of Trance can be found at the ASOT section of Armin's website. Internationally, the show attracts more than 26 million listeners a week, making it the most popular radio show in the world. In 2008 the 400th edition was celebrated on a large scale, listeners and fans were able to experience the show for 72 hours, live from 3 different countries. The first broadcast was aired from Club Butan in Wuppertal Germany on Thursday April 16th, the second on Friday April 17th from Club Air in Birmingham, U.K., and the third and last one was closed down in style on Saturday April 18th in the massive Maas Silo in Rotterdam. Armin personally appeared at all locations. Armada Music Amsterdam based Armada Music was founded in June 2003 by Armin van Buuren, Maykel Piron and David Lewis. "Armada" was formed by utilizing the first two letters in each of the founding members' names. The highly successful label currently has 19 different sub-labels (including Armind) representing many different types of electronic music. 2 BIOGRAPHY (continued) New Media On the road biography 'Armin Only' Dutch author Coen Bom, has followed Armin around the world for over a year. Focusing on a very important year in Armin's musical career, the one in which he's crowned to 'Number 1 DJ of the World'. Coen gives you a full report of Armin's many gigs, backstage adventures and journeys across the globe. With exclusive interviews, photo's and much more. Awards & Accolades With a hectic schedule packed to the rafters with headline slots at major clubs and festivals across the globe this is a man truly at the top of his game. His productions have all made a huge impact and quickly gain worldwide acclaim. He is a dedicated Trance lover, but isn't imprisoned by a single genre, saying "What makes Trance work so well is that it doesn't stick to one style, and can incorporate electro, minimal, whatever it likes." The main ingredient to Armin's life will always be music. "This is just what I really want," he says. "It's not just love for music, it's my passion. It goes beyond liking, and beyond a hobby, it's about a way of living. Music is essential to my life". November 2009 arminvanbuuren.com astateoftrance.com youtube.com/arminvanbuuren In October 2009, Armin had the premiere of launching the first full music DVD as an application for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The complete DVD of Armin's 'Armin Only' concert in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht, is now available as app. After downloading the app, users can see the full live registration on their iPhone or iPod Touch. In fact, the Armada Music channel is the most viewed music channel in the world. The music video for Armin's "In & Out of Love" has received more than 35 million views, and is therefore the most viewed music video of all time within all categories, on the Dutch YouTube. MIKE DOUGHTY

Yes And Also Yes

THINGS MIKE DOUGHTY WOULD LIKE YOU TO KNOW ABOUT HIS NEW ALBUM

YES AND ALSO YES.

1.
The title, YES AND ALSO YES was the headline of my profile on an online dating site. I improvised it off the top of my head, because they wouldn't let me post until I wrote a headline. I was wretchedly unsuccessful at online dating.

2.
The single, "NA NA NOTHING", was partially stolen from a song written by Nikki Sixx, Dan Wilson (wrote "Closing Time"), and Matt Gerrard (wrote a bunch of tunes in "High School Musical.") (I got their permission to steal it)

3.
"Holiday," a Christmas song, is a duet with Rosanne Cash. I did a show with her, and she said, onstage, "I feel nervous playing my new songs, because Mike Doughty is here, and he's such a great songwriter." That BLEW MY MIND.

4.
The song "Into the Un" was written for, and rejected by the Twilight soundtrack. (It's about goth kids on LSD in a train station)

5.
I recorded it in a studio in Koreatown, Manhattan, from July '10 to April '11. Pat Dillett produced. Notable musicians included my trusty factotum Andrew "Scrap" Livingston on bass, and the pianist Thomas Bartlett, aka Doveman, who basically plays with everbody who's groovy (Justin Bond, Antony and the Johnsons, Glen Hansard, the National, David Byrne, Yoko Ono). I'm releasing it on my own label, SNACK BAR, through Megaforce. I split with Dave Matthews' label ATO so I could run my own shop and have more control, business-wise.

6.
I wrote most of the songs at the legendary artists' colony Yaddo, where Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, James Baldwin, Truman Capote, Flannery O'Connor, Carson McCullers, Sylvia Plath, and a lot of other all-time giants worked. It was founded by a railroad tycoon's wife, in her mansion, built in the 1890s. They put up artists for a month or two, feed them in an opulent dining room, and give them space and time to work.

7.
I used a capsule of the antidepressant duloxetine as a percussion instrument on some tracks. I held the tiny pill between my thumb and forefinger, put it close to the mic and shook it so it made a shcka-shcka-shcka! sound.

8.
I wrote a book about my ugly, drug-doing years called THE BOOK OF DRUGS. It's coming out in 2012 on Da Capo/Perseus.

9.
The song "Makelloser Mann" is in German.

10.

I play a Chinese lute (called a zhong ruan) on the song "Telegenic Exes, #1"

11.

In the liner notes, I say I exclusively wear Paul Smith suits and Sol Moscot
eyeglasses, and eat only gummi bears made by Haribo. I did this because I hope they'll send me free stuff.

ABOUT SUSAN JUSTICE

Every now and then an artist arrives on the scene and captures your attention not with pyrotechnics, high fashion or cutting edge technology but with an honest voice, an open heart, and songs that touch your soul. SUSAN JUSTICE just might be one of those rare artists who can speak to a generation. On her debut album Eat Dirt, soon to be released on Capitol
Records/Kite Records, Justice delivers a collage of emotionally resonant songs that are deeply personal and reflective, but at the same time connect with anyone who’s ever tried to figure out who they are and where they belong. Eat Dirt is an inspiring story of survival and a wild joyful
ride that puts a smile on your face in these most difficult of times.

Justice’s story is an unusual one. She was raised by itinerant parents who were members of a religious sect known as The Family. Susan, the second oldest of ten kids, spent her childhood and teen years on the road with her parents and siblings, performing music on the streets all over the world. During the course of their travels, the family slept everywhere from a van parked in a lot in Germany, to a train station bench in Italy, to a city bus renovated by Justice’s father and parked on the street in New York City. “We would drive around for hours looking for a parking space for the night,” she recalls. “Sometimes we would stay for a few months, but most of the
time, it was a new town every few days.”

Justice’s parents were strict about their children not consuming anything that wasn’t sanctioned by The Family. So in her teens Justice had to hide her books, magazines and music, secretly devouring albums by Alanis Morissette, Tracy Chapman, Joan Osborne, Prince, The Fugees,
Nirvana, etc. Justice was inspired hearing other artists tell their stories through their music.
One day, Justice impulsively decided to strike out on her own. She ran away from her family and hid in the subway. She watched in amazement as people piled onto the crowded subway cars. She noticed a pan handler singing for his supper. In short order she was doing much the
same, busking in the subway, drawing large appreciative crowds, and often earning as much as 0 a day. “I felt really connected to people singing in the subway,” she says. “It was amazing to play by myself for a change. That’s when I really began to blossom as a songwriter.” With the
money she earned playing in the subway, Justice recorded a CD and began to sell her music.

In 2007, she released The Subway Recordings (under her given name Susan Cagle), which was compiled from two live sets she had performed in Times Square and Grand Central Station. The following year, Spin Doctors’ drummer Aaron Comess caught her act at a club and introduced
her to veteran artist manager David Sonenberg (The Fugees, John Legend and the Black Eyed Peas) who set Justice up with songwriter/producer Toby Gad (Beyoncé, Fergie, Alicia Keys) and advised her to write songs about her life. And that’s exactly what she did. Toby and Susan wrote
and performed every song on the Eat Dirt LP.

“Toby was like my psychiatrist,” Justice says. “Because at that time, I was kind of homeless. I really didn’t know what I was doing with my life. Toby made me dig deep to write about what I was feeling. Getting in touch with those feelings was the real breakthrough for me. Toby set me
on the path to writing songs that gave people a window into my personal story.”
“Susan is a real artist who can do it all,” Gad says. “She can simply pick up a guitar and command your attention. She moves you to tears of joy and somehow makes you want to stand up and cheer. I love her honesty, vulnerability, and inner beauty.”

The first song Justice and Gad wrote together was “I Wonder,” which Justice calls a magical tale akin to Alice in Wonderland, an empowering journey where Justice questions those who tried to tell her how to think and feel. On the title track “Eat Dirt,” Justice acknowledges that you may
have to eat a little dirt in order to learn some hard lessons. But you come out stronger on the other side. On “Bob Dylan” Justice expresses the elation she felt when she realized that she could be open about her past rather than run away from it.

“I’ve had a hard time expressing myself because I had so many secrets about my life,” she says.
“It’s a relief to engage with people, to attempt to communicate how you are feeling, even if you’re not the most eloquent person.” Justice takes a lighter tone on the upbeat love song “Paper Planes” and the playful “Forbidden Fruits,” which not only describes her delight at the unpredictable adventure of life in New York City, but also cements the album’s theme of
freedom. According to Justice, "curiosity didn't kill the cat. It saved the cat!"

Although the songs chronicle some of the heavier things Justice has faced, it’s clear that she hastriumphed over all her adversities. “My past has made me who I am today. And for that I’m grateful. I’ve survived and I’m feeling positive and creative. I’m looking ahead, not backwards.”

CURREN$Y with THE JETS, SMOKE DZA, FIEND 4 DA MONEY, CORNER BOY P, TRADEMARK & YOUNG RODDY
Event on 2012-05-16 21:00:00

New Orleans rapper and Hip-Hop connoisseur Curren$y thrives on making music on his own terms. With his “Jet Life” mantra about living life to the fullest, the savvy rhyme spitter (why do you think they call him “Spitta”?) is focused on a lyrical devotion to the truth and authenticity. It’s because of this ethos that the man born Shante Anthony Franklin has transcended any regional rap stereotypes to become a favorite of bloggers, critics, fans and everyone in between. Now aligned with Warner Bros., the plan is to let Spitta be himself, but have even more people get acquainted with the Jet (Just Enjoy This Sh*t) Life.

Inspired by a litany of Hip-Hop heavyweights (“You’re putting your voice on top of some shit, you gotta say something.”) including Slick Rick, Snoop Dogg, Camp Lo, DJ Quick, A Tribe Called Quest, OutKast and 8Ball & MJG, by 2002 the young Curren$y took his talents to Master P. Signing a recording deal with No Limit Records, he was a member of the 504 Boyz. Only two years later, he switched over to Cash Money Records, becoming the marquee artist of Lil Wayne’s then fledgling Young Money Records. The experience with the hometown labels taught him not only how to be a team player but about the type of artist he wanted to be.

“I was in other places. The verse before would be about possibly decapitating somebody with a shotgun and boatloads of cocaine,” recalls Curren$y. “So young me was like, so I shot him too and I got two keys out of the ten. Then I would try to sneak in something else about how I got the newest Jordans and this that and third to still be myself.”

Curren$y went for self in late 2007 when he formally left the Young Money fold. An album called Music To Fly To was recorded for the label but never released. After walking away from the Lil Wayne co-sign, Curren$y began releasing mixtapes (Life At 30,000 Feet, Independence Day, et al.) to let fans know his talents didn’t go to waste when he was sitting on the shelf. Off the strength of his mixtapes, Curren$y earned a spot on the coveted 2009 Freshmen cover of XXL Magazine (December 2008 issue), labeling him as one of Hip-Hop’s most promising acts.

Labels began sniffing around for Curren$y’s services around this time, but he preferred to remain independent. “The rap game, I didn’t know the politics of it until I was completely dolo in making the music that I make. I started going to meetings and realizing how the machine was set up.”

Spitta was increasing his music business IQ but was still adamant about not compromising his art. “Any song that an artist gives you, if there’s a world for him out there, it’s going to do what it do,” he says. “It doesn’t have to sound like whatever’s popping on the radio. It has to sound like that artist because that’s what people want.”

The New Orleans native moved to New York City because he felt that the creative energy there would only help him bolster his movement. “It was just smarter for my hustle to be somewhere where everything is right at my fingertips,” he says. “It just so happened that the city was fucking with me. I felt the love the whole time and I still do. When I got out here to New York, I was able to be with so many people absolutely on the grind. I could shoot a video every day, and they wanted to do it. Once I got all that work done, people [back home] came out of their shells and said I can do this. Now I’m assembling a team in the city of people that are talented and I’m working with them as well.”

To call Curren$y’s output of music prolific would be an understatement. In 2009 Curren$y released This Ain’t No Mixtape, via Amalgam Digital, and the same year released another album, Jet Files. He also aligned with ex-Roc-a-fella Records head honcho Dame Dash and his new DD172 venture. The result was that in 2010, Curren$y would again drop two albums, Pilot Talk and Pilot Talk 2, via Dash’s DD172 label with distribution from Def Jam Records. Throughout this time Spitta was receiving acclaim for his music, and videos, as well as making moves with lifestyle and streetwear brands like Married to the Mob, LRG and Diamond Supply Co. An avid automobile fan and collector, he also has a couple of car clubs (Boxed Sets with Chuck English from rap group the Cool Kids, and Cruise Life in New Orleans with his manager).

Yes, Curren$y is living the good life, but don’t make the mistake of calling him some type of stoner rapper. “When you rapping about weed and kicking it, how pissed off can people be with you. dog?,” he observes. “If that’s really what you doing. Just don’t be a studio chiller. Everybody wants to get on with this fucking weed rap. It’s not weed rap. There’s no stoner rap. It’s not a genre, that’s bullshit. Anybody that’s doing that should be kicked in the balls because that’s some gimmick shit. Four bars ago you were barely smoking, dog, and now you’re smoking a doobie.”

What continues to smoke is Curren$y’s work ethic. Now aligned with Warner Bros. (“It’s like Street Fighter: Championship edition. Four more characters. Ryu and Ken got different colored suits now. It’s crazy. [laughs]”), he is not slowing down with his music in the slightest. Immediate plans include four news projects; Covert Coup EP (with producer the Alchemist, due out April 20), Muscle Car Chronicles, Weekend at Burnies and a Gangsta Grillz mixtape with DJ Drama titled Verde Terrace. There are also plans for a JETS project with rappers Trademark and Young Roddy. All of these projects will prepare fans for Curren$y’s as yet untitled official album release on Warner Bros.

The charismatic Curren$y is living, breathing example of that tried and true quote from from Confucius: “Picking a job you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”

“I hit the ultimate liq. I watch basketball like, ‘Yo, they’re getting paid to play’,” says Curren$y. “This is the equivalent. Yeah, it’s work, but the trade off is pretty G’d up.” Now that’s the Jet Life.

GO DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK!! if you want interest formula Principle X (1xi)^n . Plug it in and n is the number of periods. If you want it to be compounded monthly or quaterly devide i into the appropriate number. and use dictionary.com to get your definitions.
